Livelyblog will switch from using the http protocol to https when using the entire service and all blogs on it as of February 1st, 2008.

The https ssl certificate will be signed by CA Cert. Their root certificate, which can be downloaded and installed at https://www.cacert.org/index.php?id=3 is NOT included in many web browsers, including Internet Explorer and Firefox. The certificate is included in many GNU/Linux distributions, but not all. This means that visitors who have not installed the root certificate will get a warning message about the signing authority being unknown when viewing blogs on this website.

The cost of a “real” SSL certificate

There is no security difference betwen using a CA Cert signed ssl certificate and one from services such as GeoTrust. The only difference is that visitors will get a warning message when visiting this site if they have not installed the CA Cert root certificate — this may be annoying. There is, as mentioned, no security advantage of using a SSL certificate from a provider who has paid to get their root certificate shipped with most web browsers — the only difference is that users must manually install their root certificate or click yes to a warning message.

Donations are welcome

A GeoTrust wildcard SSL certificate costs $489 pr year. We can simply not afford to pay this much just to prevent visitors from getting a warning message or having to install CA Cert’s root certificate. However, we do accept donations. You can donate to support@livelyblog.com through PayPal. Label the donation SSL Certificate.

We will install a GeoTrust SSL certificate if we get atleast $400 in SSL donations. Livelyblog will be running a CA Cert SSL certificate from February 1st until or unless it is possible to buy a SSL certificate which is signed by a SSL provider which has their root cert included in most browsers.

We now allow the following filetypes to be uploaded:

jpg jpeg png gif pdf txt mp3 mp4 m4v flv ogg ogm avi rtf doc mid xla xls xlt xlw swf tar zip gz mpg mpeg mov

Note the audio and video formats, “podcasting” by uploading .ogg or .mp3 files is now possible. The editor supports playing such files using a flash player, which means that your blogs visitors only need support for flash to hear the uploaded audio files. Video, on the other hand, is a whole other story, and requires that the browser can actually play video files. For example, uploading a .wmv video file would play fine in one browser (Internet Explorer), but the video will not play on many Linux systems.

There are many good solutions for browsing the Internet anonymously. Tor is probably the best solution for browsing and publishing anonymously on the Internet today, and can also be used to publish your own blog here at Livelyblog.

But what if you do not want to trust us with your e-mail address? This presents a problem, because you are required to enter a e-mail address when you sign up. This e-mail contains a verification link which you then need to follow in order to activate your blog. This verification is mainly there to stop automatic signups from bots; it also makes this less attractive to spammers who simply want to create yet another spam-blog with dozens of SEO-links to their own site(s).

A very simple solution, if you want to connect anonymously using Tor and do not want to give us your e-mail adress is to use the free Mailinator service. This is a service which makes a new random e-mail addresse just for you upon loading their page. This is a service you can used for e-mail verification when signing up at forums and other services where you think the administrator may be tempted to spam you; the account is alive for a few hours, allows you to get the verification e-mails and click the links in them, and then that e-mail account just dies.

Mailinator is a great tool you can use to signup to Livelyblog without giving us your real e-mail. If you use Tor to connect here and Mailinator for your e-mail verification when signing up then you can be sure we – nor anyone else – will have any idea who you are: You are safe to blow the whistle on your government, employer, foundation etc. without fear.
